City of Upland
The designs reflect the unique history and culture of the City while providing a flexible space to facilitate community events and entertainment, and is a key piece to the Downtown revitalization plan. The Urban Plaza will feature an arched entryway with stone-veneered columns as the primary access point from Second Avenue. A raised concrete stage will be incorporated for performances, and a performance plaza will provide a gathering space with two large shade trees planted within tree wells. The plaza's surface will be a combination of colored concrete paving, etched paving depicting historic points of interest, and decomposed granite paving with concrete curb edges. A commemorative "1906" bronze inlay and decorative donor brick banding will be included in the performance plaza. Column pilasters with overhead string lights will enhance the ambiance, and a bike station with racks, a repair station, and trailhead signage will cater to cyclists. Numerous light pole standards and multiple covered seating areas with picnic tables and trash receptacles will be provided. A small lemon grove will create a natural buffer along Third Avenue, and a dry streambed/rain garden with cobblestones, boulders, and native plants will address storm water infiltration. Stone-veneered seat walls with concrete caps will offer seating options throughout the plaza. Ribbed paving indicators will slow down bicycle traffic at the entrances, and mortared cobble paving with landscape boulders will define the street frontages along Second Avenue and Third Avenue. Finally, permanent traffic safety bollards will prevent cars from entering the plaza through the alley.
